PRO Kew WO12/7871. Muster & Pay Rolls of the 71st Regiment of Light Foot (later the HLI). 1 July to 30 September 1831 in Quebec, Canada. Discharges, Desertions, Deaths &c. 23 August 1831.

Transported: Privates Samuel Akehurst, William Batty, John Broad, Thomas Burchell.

All Sussex origin, previous occupation labourer. All had been shown on the previous quarter's roll as being in Quebec gaol. Although the 71st were primarily a Scottish regiment, it seems they did recruit elsewhere. These chaps seem to have enlisted in 1828. One wonders why four Sussex men ended up, presumably, in Australia, via Canada. On the same roll, also Sussex origin, Private William Trueman; plasterer, discharged at Chatham 8 April 1831 (probably invalided home).
